Few cities on Earth boast as many first-rate museums as Los Angeles. High in the Hills overlooking LA stands The Getty -- a massive gift to the city by the foundation of the same name. An impressive art gallery and garden, it’s free to visit -- but you pay to park. Be sure to make an appoint-ment.
Nearby, the Hammer Museum (outside UCLA in Westwood) offers an eclectic collection. The city’s ar-tistic center is the Los Angeles COunty Museum of Art on the Miracle Mile. Everything from modern works to antiquities fill its multiple galleries.
Finally, the Norton Simon in Pasadena holds the work of several world-famous artists and a Japanese garden for contemplation. Be sure to check with each museum as many have free visit days (usually Thursdays).
