Recreations & Leisure

Los Angeles #7

Every individual neighborhood has its own park system, but the sprawling acreage of Griffith Park houses the Hollywood Sign and is LA’s answer to Central Park New York. The park systems run sports leagues inviting locals to join in friendly c in basketball, volleyball, softball, etc.

On the sports side of fun, LA still lacks an NFL football team, but the area is home to the Los Angeles Dodgers and Angels (Orange County) in baseball, the Lakers and Clippers in Basketball, UCLA and USC in major college sports, and the Los Angeles Kings in hockey. The town also hosts WNBA, Arena League Football and Major League Soccer franchises.

The city boasts an excellent collection of affordable public golf courses and tennis courts. The most bi-zarre golf courses include...

The Rancho 9-Hole Par-3 Course in Century City near 20th Century Fox Studios. Its 18 holes handle more wear and tear than any other golf course on Earth. Nestled into bustling berms, there are more rounds played by more golfers on Rancho Park than on any links stretch anywhere.

Los Angeles #10

The course is a true pitch and putt -- a miniature set of nine holes that the above average player would need only a wedge and blade to tackle. The holes average a little more than 100 yards each, with the shortest link coming in at 82 yards and the long run at 148. With such miniscule distances to tackle, a competent swinger could easily stroll these nine greens in 90 minutes to a couple hours.

The Westchester Golf Course & Driving Range exists because city designers managed to wedge in this simple par 3 & 4 course just north of LAX between the main takeoff path of the west coast's busiest airport and the campus of Loyola Marymount University.

Holes 11, 12, 13 and 14 literally abut LAX. In fact, 12 and 13 are parallel par 3s allowing play-ers to watch DC-10s taxiing between fuel trucks and luggage carts past the airports northernmost terminal. When the wind blows in from the ocean, the jets take off to west and roar past the 13 hole, causing even the steeliest nerves to require a reset.

And, just to be a bit more odd, the course is only 15 holes long...
